PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW
(CHI WHITE SOX-SEATTLE)
*Mariners hope to end scoreless skid vs. White Sox*
---------------------------------------------------
Chi White Sox (16-17) at Seattle (14-22) 10:10 pm EDT
SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The offensively-inept Seattle Mariners will
look to avoid a fouth consecutive defeat Friday when they host
the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game series.
The Mariners have failed to score a run over the previous 22
innings and managed just one run over the last 32 frames.
Seattle's offensive woes boiled over in Thursday's 5-0 loss to
the Texas Rangers as first baseman Richie Sexson charged the
mound and caused a bench-clearing brawl. Sexson threw his
helmet at the opposing pitcher Kason Gabbard and a suspension is
likely coming.
The White Sox have also been struggling recently, but came away
with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.
Jermaine Dye and Juan Uribe each homered in that comeback win
for Chicago, which has still lost seven of its previous nine
games.
Dye, who has six blasts on the season, has homered in each of
the last three contests.
Chicago will send righthander Jose Contreras (2-3, 4.08 ERA) to
the mound. The 36-year-old Cuban tossed eight innings, allowing
four runs and six hits with five strikeouts in Sunday's 4-3
loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Mariners will counter with Carlos Silva (3-1, 4.20), who was
roughed up in his last outing - an 8-2 loss to the New York
Yankees on Sunday. The Venezuelan righthander was tagged for
eight runs and 11 hits with a strikeout over just three innings,
raising his ERA from 2.79.
