MEMPHIS (Ticker) -- Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts are
not the only ones that will reap rewards for Memphis'
near-championship season.
John Calipari has agreed in principle on a multi-year contract
to remain the coach of the Tigers, The Commercial Appeal
reported on its web site Tuesday.
According to the report, Memphis has been in talks with Calipari
on a package that would pay him around $2.5 million annually.
This past season, Calipari made a guaranteed $1.8 million
according to the paper, not including any bonuses he may have
earned for guiding the Tigers to their first Final Four
appearance since 1985, and first showing in the title game since
1973.
Memphis ended up missing out on its first national crown in
overtime to Kansas after being unable to hold a nine-point lead
with just over two minutes left in regulation.
Despite the poor end, the run through the tournament brought a
great deal of exposure for the Rose and Douglas-Roberts, who are
both expected to leave school early to be first-round picks in
the NBA draft.
Along with the raise, the report has Calipari's deal including a
$2.5 million annuity that he will get if he remains with
Memphis through 2010 - his 10th season with the school.
Although their have not been any strong links between Calipari
and another school recently, Memphis athletic director R.C.
Johnson stated to the paper that some schools have made
inquiries.
The most logical school that could be on that list would be
Oklahoma State, which appears determined to land a big-name
coach after Sean Sutton resigned the week leading up the Final
Four.
According to The Commercial Appeal, Johnson stated that he first
approached Calipari about a new deal in January.
