With the Canadian Football League season less than a week away, Captain Canada continues in a series of editorials aimed to prepare football fans for the exciting season ahead. Today, The Captain tells us that we actually know more about the game North of the border than we think we do.
I'm Captain Canada, and the CFL season starts this Thursday! Why wait until September to make money on football when you can start this week? Let me tell you something - the CFL point spreads are not set with the same level of sophistication and due diligence as the NFL lines, due to the fact that the NFL games receive infinitely more exposure and betting action. This creates an unprecedented opportunity for outstanding winning percentages.
The bottom line? You don't need to follow the games to make money, because I live here in Canada and know the game inside out, so I will do the analysis on your behalf. That being said, you actually know more about the Canadian league and its history than you think you do. Of course, we all remember Ricky Williams' brief stint in the CFL last season because it was headline news. But the six players below have left a legitimate legacy on the Canadian game, and will always have a place in the heart of Canadian Football fans.
Doug Flutie: Famous in the United States for his Hail Mary TD pass in his final game at Boston College, he's the little guy that could. With his combination of speed, instincts, and athleticism, Doug's style of play was perfectly suited to the Canadian game. Doug re-wrote the record books in his eight years in Canada, winning six MVP trophies and three Grey Cup Championships. He's widely considered the greatest player in CFL history.
Warren Moon: A member of both the Pro Football and CFL hall of fame, Warren played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 1978-1983. He remains a legend in Edmonton to this day for his achievements. He won the Grey Cup in each of his first five seasons in the league, a feat that will certainly never be duplicated. His consolation prize for not winning the championship in 1983? He was named league MVP that year, passing for over 5,000 yards!
Jeff Garcia: Terrell Owens may not be a fan of his, but Jeff has no shortage of supporters in Canada. Garcia began his professional career in 1994 with the Calgary Stampeders as a backup to Doug Flutie. He eventually became the starter, and in 1998 he left Canada a hero by winning the Grey Cup MVP trophy in his final game.
Raghib "Rocket" Ismail: Following a standout college career at Notre Dame, The Rocket shocked the sports world in 1991 by spurning the NFL and instead signing a record contract with the Toronto Argonauts. The move paid immediate dividends for both parties, as in that very first year Toronto won the Grey Cup and The Rocket was named MVP of the Championship game.
Joe Theisman: An NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champion, Joe actually began his professional career with the Toronto Argonauts in 1971, leading his squad to the Grey Cup game in his rookie season. Joe played three memorable seasons in Toronto before taking his trade south of the border.
Marv Levy: When you hear the name Marv Levy, you think of the Buffalo Bills and the four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Fortunately, Marv had more success winning the big one up North. As coach of the Montreal Allouettes from 1973 - 1977, Marv led his team to three Grey Cup appearances, two of which resulted in championships. He was also named Coach of the Year in 1974.
